What is the Board AI Institute?
The Board AI Institute is an executive advisory practice that equips boards of directors, chairs, and CEOs to govern AI as a source of competitive advantage. It was founded by Robert Maciejko, co-author of Power Steering, Not a Brake, one of the most-downloaded board AI governance papers on SSRN. The practice delivers board sessions, private briefings, and keynotes.
What is the STAR framework?
STAR is a board-level review discipline for AI governance created by Robert Maciejko. It organizes board oversight around four questions. Shareholder Value Thesis: what are the two or three things AI should do to increase or defend shareholder value? Threat Parity: do we match the capabilities of the attackers and disruptors targeting us? Ability: do we have the leaders, data, and capabilities to execute? Risk Budget: how much risk are we explicitly prepared to take, and where? STAR was introduced in the SSRN paper Power Steering, Not a Brake and has been featured by Egon Zehnder and the Columbia Law School Blue Sky Blog.

What is the flagship board session?
AI Governance: Power Steering, Not a Brake is a half-day, in-room working session for full boards and committees. It applies the STAR framework live to the board's own AI initiatives and leaves the board with an action sheet, escalation questions, and a shared vocabulary. Engagements are scoped by inquiry through the Request a Session page.
What is the Board AI Readiness Check?
A free, anonymous, twelve-question diagnostic that scores a board against the four STAR dimensions in about five minutes. No email is required. It shows a board where it is steering and where it is flying blind.

Keynotes and private briefings for board retreats, leadership offsites, and director associations are booked through the Invite Robert page. Recent keynotes include the Institute of Directors Global Webinar and Corporate Governance & Ethics in the Age of AI.
